DRAFT AGENDA OF THE MEETING OF GOVERNMENT EXPERTS ON
THE PREVENTION OF AND WAR ON CRIME

THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES,

HAVING SEEN the report of the Chair of the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs on the Special Meeting of the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs to Prepare for the Meeting of Government Experts on the Prevention of and War on Crime, document CP/CAJP-1479/99;

BEARING IN MIND that the Permanent Council, through resolution CP/RES. 741 (1180/99) of January 20, 1999, convened the aforementioned Special Meeting of the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs in order to, inter alia, prepare and approve the agenda, the working format, and other background for the Meeting of Government Experts on the Prevention of and War on Crime, to be held on April 19 and 20 in Medellín, Colombia; and

CONSIDERING that the aforementioned Special Meeting was held on February 22 and 23, 1999, and that during that meeting the mandate to consider the preliminary draft agenda, emanating from the above-mentioned resolution CP/RES. 741 (1180/99), was fulfilled,

RESOLVES:

To approve the Preliminary Draft Agenda for the Meeting of Government Experts on the Prevention of and War on Crime, to be held on April 19 and 20, in Medellín, Colombia, the text of which appears below:

DRAFT AGENDA

1. Election of officers

2. Adoption of the agenda
   
   
3. Examination of additional measures that could be implemented in the inter-American system

1. Measuring crime and violence
2. Policies to combat crime and violence
3. Training in police work, criminology, and criminal investigation and training of prison officials and agents and those working with ex-convicts
4. Establishment of cooperation mechanisms with other multilateral agencies, governments, private foundations, and nongovernmental organizations
5. Exchange of legislative and operational experience on the matter
