MEETING OF GOVERNMENT EXPERTS ON THE
PREVENTION OF AND WAR ON CRIME

THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES,

HAVING SEEN the report of the Chair of the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs on the Meeting of Government Experts on the Prevention of and War on Crime (CP/CAJP-1148/99);

CONSIDERING:

That, at its twenty-eighth regular session, the General Assembly instructed the Permanent Council, in resolution AG/RES. 1563 (XXVIII-O/98), "The Prevention of and War on Crime," "to prepare the agenda and set the date for a meeting of government experts, in accordance with resources allocated in the program-budget and other resources, to facilitate a broad hemispheric discussion that will set the parameters and guidelines for addressing inter-American cooperation in these areas and provide a basis on which the OAS may develop a multilateral program in this area, and to convene that meeting as soon as possible";

That, in that same resolution, the General Assembly instructed the General Secretariat to prepare a report on relevant international experiences in this area and, in particular, on United Nations crime-prevention and crime-fighting efforts, so as to identify further measures that might be taken in the inter-American context; and

That the General Secretariat has already concluded drafting that report, which was published and distributed as document CP/CAJP-1415/98; and

TAKING INTO ACCOUNT the generous offer of the Government of the Republic of Colombia to host that meeting,

RESOLVES:

1. To convene the Meeting of Government Experts on the Prevention of and War on Crime.

2. To accept and express appreciation for the generous offer of the Government of Colombia to host the Meeting in the city of Medellín.

3. To set April 19 and 20 as the dates for the Meeting of Government Experts on the Prevention of and War on Crime.

4. To authorize the General Secretariat to avail itself of the necessary resources, as approved by the General Assembly at its twenty-fifth special session, for holding the Meeting of Government Experts.
