DECLARATION OF THE PERMANENT COUNCIL ON THE DEATH OF
MR. MIGUEL DE LA MADRID HURTADO, FORMER PRESIDENT OF MEXICO
(Adopted at its session held on 2 April, 2012)
THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES,
BEARING IN MIND the death in Mexico City, on April 1, 2012, of Mr.
Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado, President of Mexico from December 1, 1982
to November 30, 1988;
CONSIDERING the key role that former President Madrid played in the
economic liberalization of his country; his contribution to the
pacification of Central America as a member of the Contadora Group,
which paved the way for the agreements reached; not to mention his
contribution to the advancement of reading in Spanish and his efforts to
disseminate Latin American culture,
EXPRESSES its profound sorrow at the passing of Mr. Miguel de la Madrid
Hurtado, which marks a great loss for his country and for the
Hemisphere, and conveys its condolences to his family and to the people
and Government of Mexico.
