DECLARATION BY THE PERMANENT COUNCIL
ON THE PASSING OF MR. ITAMAR AUGUSTO CAUTIERO FRANCO
FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERATIVE REPUBLIC OF BRAZIL
(Adopted at its session held on July 13, 2011)
THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES,
BEARING IN MIND the death of Senator Itamar Augusto Cautiero Franco,
President of the Federative Republic of Brazil from 1992 to 1995, which
occurred in Sao Paulo, on July 2, 2011;
CONSIDERING the vital role performed by former President Franco, as
leader and statesman, in the recovery and expansion of his country’s
economy, as well as his unquestionable contribution to the building of
democracy in his country and in the region;
EXPRESSES its deepest sympathy at the immeasurable loss represented by
the death of Mr. Itamar Augusto Cautiero Franco and offers its
condolences to the people and government of Brazil; and
DECLARES its appreciation of his leadership and brilliant political
career as well as of his invaluable legacy in strengthening democratic
principles.
