DECLARATION OF THE PERMANENT COUNCIL
ON THE PASSING OF MRS. JANET JAGAN, FORMER PRESIDENT OF GUYANA

(Adopted at its session held on April 1, 2009)
 

            THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES,

            BEARING IN MIND the death of Janet Jagan, former President of Guyana (from 1997 to 1999), whose decease occurred on Saturday, March 28, 2009;

           CONSIDERING the importance of her duties as Minister of the Government, Prime Minister, President, and First Lady of her country, and taking into account that she was the first women elected as President of Guyana;

           CONSIDERING ALSO her fundamental role in the establishment of democracy and political freedoms, fostering human rights, particularly those of women and children, improving social conditions, promoting culture and freedom of the press in Guyana, and her dedication to regional integration, and

          EXPRESSES its deepest regret at the decease of Janet Jagan, a great loss for the continent, the Caribbean region, and her country, and its condolences to the people and Government of Guyana.
