Office of the Assistant Secretary General
The assistant secretary general is elected by the
General Assembly for a five-year term and may not be
reelected more than once or succeeded by a person of
the same nationality. In the event that the
executive office
of assistant secretary general becomes vacant, the
Permanent Council elects a substitute to hold that
office until the General Assembly elects a new
assistant secretary general for a full term.
The assistant secretary general is the secretary of
the Permanent Council and of its subsidiary organs
and committees. He or she serves as advisory
officer to the secretary general and acts as the
secretary general’s delegate in all matters which
the latter may entrust to him or her. During the
temporary absence or disability of the secretary
general, the assistant secretary general performs
his or her duties.
The assistant secretary general acts as Secretary of
Ad Hoc Committees for the Peaceful Settlement
of Disputes established by the Permanent Council
pursuant to Article 86 of the Charter.
Performs the functions of Secretary of the Permanent
Council when it acts provisionally as an organ of
consultation. Acts as secretary
of the Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of
Foreign Affairs when the Rules of Procedure of the
Meeting so provide and as secretary of the
Preparatory Committee of the General Assembly.
The Office of the Assistant Secretary General
includes the following dependencies, according to
Executive Order No. 05-03:

General;

The Secretariat of the General Assembly, the
Meeting of Consultation, the Permanent Council, and
Subsidiary Organs;

The Office of Conferences and Meetings;

The Columbus Memorial Library;

The Office of the Inter-American Children's
Institute; and
-
The Permanent Secretariat of the Inter-American
Commission of Women.
