The
Inter-American Juridical Committee, headquartered in Rio de
Janeiro, is one of the organs through which the Organization
of American States accomplishes its purposes.
The Committee
serves the Organization as an advisory body on juridical
matters of an international nature and promotes the
progressive development and the codification of
international law.
It also studies
juridical problems related to the integration of the
developing countries of the Hemisphere and, insofar as may
appear desirable, the possibility of attaining uniformity in
their legislation.
The Office of
International Law serves as the technical secretariat to
the Committee.
Article 53 of the [Charter of the
Organization of American States]
provides: "The
Organization of American States accomplishes its purposes by
means of: ... d) The Inter-American Juridical Committee."
Chapter XIV of the Charter, in Articles 99 to 105,
establishes a number of rules to govern this advisory body.
The Juridical Committee also has [Statute],
which were
adopted in 1972 by General Assembly resolution AG/RES. 89
(II-O/72). Its [Rules of Procedure], originally adopted in 1972, were
amended by decisions of the Juridical Committee itself in
1976, 1986, 1987, and 1991.
