XXXIII Assembly of Delegates of the CIM

San Salvador, El Salvador,  November 13-15, 2006

 

The Thirty-third Assembly of Delegates of the CIM was held in San Salvador, El Salvador,  November 13-15, 2006. Delegates from 31 member states attended the meeting, as well as representatives of agencies of the inter-American and United Nations systems and of non governmental organizations.  

The Assembly elected a new Executive Committee for the 2006-2008 term. Jacqui Quinn-Leandro, CIM Principal Delegate and Minister of Labour, Public Administration and Empowerment of Antigua and Barbuda was elected President.  Martha Lucía Vazquéz Zadawsky, Principal Delegate and Head of the Presidential Council on Women  was elected Vice-President.  The other members of the Executive Committee are  Brazil, Guatemala, Haiti, Peru and Uruguay.

The Dialogue of Heads of Delegation focused on the prevalence of HIV among women,  and its link to gender-based violence and to aspects of multi-dimensional security.  "Take the Test", A PAHO campaign on HIV/AIDS,  was also pre-launched during the Dialogue.

Other topics addressed at the Assembly included the prevention and eradication of violence against women; implementation of the Follow-Up Mechanism to the Convention of Belém do Pará;  follow-up strategies for the Fourth Summit of the Americas; parity and political participation by women in decision-making, and the implementation of the Inter-American Program on the Promotion of Women’s Human Rights and Gender Equity and Equality.  The Biennial Work Program of the CIM for 2006-2008  was also approved.
