The Thirty-first Assembly of Delegates of the CIM was held in
Punta Cana, Dominican
Republic, October 29 to 31, 2002.
Delegates from 29 member states attended the meeting, as well as
representatives from permanent observer countries to the OAS, agencies and
entities of the inter-American and United Nations systems and non
governmental organizations.
The
Assembly elected a new Executive Committee for the 2002-2004 term. Yadira Henríquez, Minister of the Secretariat of State for Women of Dominican
Republic was elected President. Florence Ievers, Deputy Head of Status of Women Canada, was
elected Vice President. Also elected to the Executive Committee were
Guatemala,
Nicaragua, Paraguay, United States and Venezuela.
Agenda items included the implementation of the
Inter-American Program on the Promotion of Women's Human Rights and
Gender Equity and Equality and implementation of the mandates of
the Third Summit of the Americas. The Agenda of the Second Meeting
of Ministers or Highest Authorities Responsible for the Advancement of
Women in the Member States (REMIM II) was considered, and women, free
trade and economic integration was adopted as the central
theme. On the issue of women and human rights, the results
of the subregional meetings of experts on implementation of the
Convention of Belém do Pará were presented, as well as a proposal to
study a follow-up mechanism for the Convention. The participants
were informed of the results of the first phase of the project on
Trafficking of Women and Children for Sexual Exploitation in the
Americas and follow-up actions were adopted.
