The Thirty-second Assembly of Delegates of the CIM was held in
Washington DC, October 27-29, 2004.
Delegates from 29 member states attended the meeting, as well as
representatives from permanent observer countries to the OAS, agencies and
entities of the inter-American and United Nations systems and non
governmental organizations.
The
Assembly elected a new Executive Committee for the 2004-2006 term. Nilcéa Freire, CIM
Principal Delegate and Minister of the Special Secretariat for Women's
Policies of Brazil was elected President. María José Argaña
de Mateu, Principal Delegate and Minister of the Secretariat for
Women of Paraguay was elected Vice-President. The other members of
the Executive Committee are Argentina, Canada, Chile, Mexico and Suriname.
The main agenda items considered
were: the Plan of Action of the Summit of the Americas and proposals for
integrating gender in the Fourth Summit to be held in Argentina in
November 2005; follow up to the implementation of the Inter-American
Program on the Promotion
of Women's Human Rights; lessons learned and strategies to pursue with
relation to
the Second Meeting
of Ministers or Highest Authorities Responsible for the Advancement of
Women in the Member States (REMIM II); and implementation of the project
to fight against the crime of trafficking in persons, especially
women, adolescents, and children.
On the issue of violence against women and the implementation
Convention of Belém do Pará, the Assembly of Delegates expressed its
satisfaction for the adoption, by the
Conference of States Party in October 2004, of the Statute of the
Mechanism for Follow-up on the Implementation of the Convention of
Belém do Pará. The CIM will act as Technical Secretariat
for this Follow Up Mechanism.
