XXX Assembly of
Delegates of the CIM
Washington, D.C., Nov. 15-16, 2000
The Thirtieth Assembly of Delegates of the CIM was held in Washington,
D.C., from November 15-16, 2000.
Delegates from 33 member states attended the meeting, as well as
representatives from permanent observer countries to the OAS, agencies and
entities of the inter-American and United Nations systems and other
organizations.
Agenda items included the implementation of the
Inter-American Program on the Promotion of Women's Human Rights and
Gender Equity and Equality, proposals on gender mainstreaming
for the Third Summit of the Americas and updated information on the
projects currently being carried out by CIM on trafficking of women and children for
sexual exploitation and follow up to the Convention of Belém do Pará.
The
Assembly elected a new Executive Committee for the 2000-2002 term. Indranie
Chandarpal of Guyana, CIM's new President, is a member
of Parliament and Member of the Cabinet of her country, serving as
Minister in Guyanas Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social
Security. Nora Uribe, of Venezuela, CIMs Vice
President, is the Director of International Relations and the Media of the
National Council of Women. Also elected to the Executive Committee were
Canada, El Salvador, Honduras, Dominican Republic and Uruguay.
Nine resolutions were adopted by the Assembly.
Mandates addressed implementation of the Inter-American Program on the
Promotion of Women's Human Rights and Gender Equity and Equality;
updating CIM's Strategic Plan of Action; distributing the 2001
Seed Fund, and giving support to the IACHR's Special Rapporteur on the
status of women in the Americas. The program guidelines adopted for the
biennium prioritize the Inter-American Program and following up on the
Summit of the Americas as well as the
issues of leadership, violence, poverty and education.
