 XXIX Assembly of CIM Delegates

Washington, D.C.,  November 16-18, 1998 

  The Twenty-ninth Assembly of Delegates was held in Washington, D.C.,  from November 16-18, 1998.  Delegates from 34 member states attended the meeting, as well as representatives from permanent observer countries to the OAS, agencies and entities of the inter-American and United Nations systems and other organizations.

  The Assembly elected the CIM Executive Committee for the 1998-2000 term. Dulce Maria Sauri Riancho, of Mexico, the new president of CIM,  is  President of Mexico’s Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI),  former Executive Coordinator of Mexico’s Programa Nacional de la Mujer and  former Governor of Yucatán.    Indranie Chandarpal of Guyana is CIM’s Vice President. Ms. Chardarpal, a member of Parliament and Member of the Cabinet, serves as Minister in Guyana’s Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, and has responsibility for Women’s Affairs and Housing.

   Argentina, Colombia, Jamaica, Paraguay and United States were also elected to the Executive Committee.

  The Assembly adopted fifteen resolutions and the Declaration of Santo Domingo, which promotes full observance of the human rights of women and reaffirms the support of the Delegates to the strengthening and modernization of the Commission.  In the programming guidelines adopted for the biennium, priority was assigned to this topic and to five issues: leadership, violence, poverty, education and strengthening and modernization of CIM.
