History
Honduras was part of the Mayan Indian Empire. The Mayas and Hondurians had an
advanced civilization and were great builders. They studied the stars and had an
accurate calendar. They worshiped one god above all the others, but also built
temples to some lesser gods.
Christopher Columbus reached the Honduran coast in 1502. The Spanish colonies in
the New World were divided into large territories. From 1539 to 1821 Honduras
was part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala.
In the
early 19th century nearly all the peoples of Latin America began their struggle
to gain independence from Spain. Honduras decided to become part of short lived
Empire of Mexico. A short time later all the lands of Central America broke away
from Mexico and formed a union of their own- The Central American Federation.
On
Nov. 5th, Honduras became a separate Republic.*
