Courses on Democracy

The Unit for the Promotion of Democracy (UPD) of the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS), in cooperation with numerous renowned institutions, has developed a program of regional training courses to strengthen the knowledge of and commitment to democracy among young leaders of the hemisphere. The UPD currently offers courses on :

  • Democratic Institutions, Values and Practices.
  • Decentralization and Local Governments.
  • The Legislative Branch in Democracy.
  • Analysis and Negotiation of Political Conflicts

These courses are held annually in different countries within four regions: the Mercosur (member and associated countries); Central America and the Dominican Republic; the Andean Region; and the (English Speaking) Caribbean.

Approximately 30 young leaders up to the age of 35, from diverse political parties, universities, non-governmental organizations, and the media, participate in each course. A balance of gender, as well as diversity of political and social groups, is considered in the selection of participants.

Renowned specialists from universities and institutions, as well as prominent political figures, offer their knowledge and personal experiences in promoting analysis, discussion and debate of the most current political issues of the region.
