ABDON CALDERON

Abdón Calderón Garaicoa was born
in 1804 to a modest, patriotic family, and naturally inherited these
qualities. He was educated by an Argentine priest with the support of
generous relatives. At age 16, he entered the military and ascended
its ranks dramatically and quickly. Soon, he would become one of the
most recognizable military figures in Ecuador’s history. In 1822 he
fought heroically in the Battle of Pichincha. Here, he was shot
several times and tragically died the following day.
