Fidel Chávez Mena has a doctorate in Law, an M.A. in Economics, and a
postrgraduate degree in International Business. He is also a recognized
expert in international politics. He has held major posts in the public
sector, as Minister of Foreign Affairs under President Napoleón Duarte
and as Minister of Planning. In addition to presiding, on two occasions,
over the General Assembly of the Organization of American States, he has
been a Deputy in his country’s National Congress and a university
professor.
He took part in his country’s Peace Agreements and was a founding
member of the Christian Democrat party. He was a student leader, a
consultant for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and for
other international organizations, and a participant in numerous
international conferences and forums.
In addition, Mr. Chávez Mena has devoted 30 years of his life to the
private sector and has been decorated with a number of distinctions by
Latin American, European, and Asian countries, as well as international
institutions. He also received the highest medal of honor from His
Holiness Pope John Paul II; was nominated a candidate for the Nobel
Peace Prize; and was named a “Champion of Peace.”
Dr. Mena is currently dedicated full time to the practice of his
profession.
