Born
in Seville on March 5, 1942. Degree in law. Labor attorney. Joined the
Socialist Youth in 1962. Married to Carmen Romero López. Has three
children.
Secretary General of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) from
October 1974 to June 1997.
Leading candidate to represent Madrid in the Congress of Deputies, in
the first general election, held in June 1977. Has served as Deputy in
all the Legislatures since that time.
In the election of October 1982, the PSOE received an absolute majority.
Elected President of the Government by the Congress of Deputies on
December 1, 1982. Remained in that post until May 1996. During that
period, the PSOE won four legislative elections, two by absolute
majority.
Served as Vice President of the Socialist International from 1978 until
November 1999. Has chaired the Global Progress Commission for Innovation
of the Socialist International, created in September 1996.
On March 3, 1996, again elected Deputy representing Madrid.
Received the Charlemagne Prize in May 1993.
Honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of Leuven, 1995.
In May 1996, His Majesty the King awarded him the Collar of the Order of
Isabella the Catholic.
In December 1996, he was named personal representative of the acting
president of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)
to head a delegation concerned with the conflict in the Yugoslav Federal
Republic. In June 1998, appointed special representative of the European
Union to the Yugoslav Federal Republic.
In October 1997, awarded the Grand Gold Cross of Merit by the Republic
of Austria.
Has chaired the Global Progress Foundation since September 1997.
In November 1998, received an honorary doctorate from the University of
Toulouse.
Elected Deputy representing Seville in March 2000.
In October 2000, awarded the Charles V Prize by the European Academy of
Yuste.
In May 2005, received an honorary doctorate from the University of Tel
Aviv.
