SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF TOURISM

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY,

HAVING SEEN resolutions AG/RES. 1426 (XXVI-O/96), "Support for OAS Tourism Activities"; CIDI/RES. 17 (II-O/97), "Sustainable Development of Tourism"; AG/RES. 1517 (XXVII-O/97), "Sustainable Tourism Development"; AG/RES. 1580 (XXVIII-O/98), "Inter-American Program for Sustainable Tourism Development"; CIDI/RES. 70 (IV-O/99), "Sustainable Development of Tourism"; and CIDI/RES. 12 (I-E/01), "Sustainable Development of Tourism";

CONSIDERING:

The important role tourism plays in the economic development strategy of the member states and the need to ensure the sustainable development of tourism in the Hemisphere;

That the Third Summit of the Americas, held in April 2001 in Quebec City, Canada, directly addressed economic growth with equity and called for an integrated and focused approach to "better competitiveness, equity enhancing trade and more equitable access to opportunities"; that it is necessary "to take measures at the national and hemispheric levels in order to create a positive environment for business…"; and "...to promote a more equitable distribution of the benefits of economic growth";

That the sustainable development of tourism can contribute to a more equitable distribution and greater community participation in economic growth; and

The offer of the Dominican Republic to host the First CIDI Meeting of Ministers of Tourism and the XVIII Inter-American Travel Congress in Santo Domingo from October 31 to November 2, 2001,

RESOLVES:

1. To take note that CIDI has convened the First CIDI Meeting of Ministers of Tourism and the XVIII Inter-American Travel Congress, to be held in Santo Domingo from October 31 to November 2, 2001.

2. To instruct the General Secretariat to provide, through the Intersectoral Tourism Unit and in coordination with SEDI, all the necessary technical and secretariat support for preparatory and follow-up meetings in connection with the meeting of ministers of tourism.

3. To recommend that the First CIDI Meeting of Ministers of Tourism consider, inter alia, the following items:

a. The review of the Inter-American Program for Sustainable Tourism, taking into account the mandates of the Third Summit of the Americas and the Strategic Plan for Partnership for Development 2002-2005; and

b. The establishment of an Inter-American Committee on Sustainable Tourism Development, consisting of sectoral authorities at the policy-making and technical levels.

4. To request CIDI to report on the implementation of this resolution to the General Assembly at its thirty-second regular session.
