OAS co-organized workshops for 500 community and religious leaders in Haiti on the importance of civil registration

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) of Haiti organized a series of sensitization workshops for religious and community leaders in the Caribbean country on the importance of civil registration and the need for all newborns to receive a certificate of birth. More than 500 people from the communities of Delmas and Cité Soleil participated in the workshops, which ended on Friday.
The MJSP, with technical support from the OAS, is currently implementing two pilot projects in Delmas and Cité Soleil, which seek to modernize the civil registry system in offices and public hospitals of Chancerelle and Saint Catherine. Other initiatives include offering support to infrastructure, human resources and materials, as well as training seminars for employees of the Civil Registry.
The active participation of inspectors, officers and employees of the Civil Registry, hospital staff, communication agents and everyone else involved in these pilot projects will help develop a methodology to modernize the civil registration process in the country and to increase the registration of children as well as of the adult population in Haiti.
