The government of El Salvador and the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) today signed an agreement formalizing the organization of the Forty-First Regular Session of the OAS General Assembly in San Salvador from June 5 to 7, 2011.
The document was signed at OAS headquarters in Washington, DC by OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, Hugo Martinez.
During the session, Ambassador Ramdin said that "we should be proud that a country like El Salvador, a relatively small country, but an important member of the OAS makes itself available to host such a meeting, with all the costs it implies," noting that such a gesture "demonstrates the commitment of the country, a very important commitment within the context of its history and with the strengthening of its democracy."
For his part, Minister Martinez said that with this signing "we completed the last part of the process, but started another key step in preparing for the OAS General Assembly," and reaffirmed his country’s willingness to "put our best effort and enthusiasm in this General Assembly to achieve positive results in the right direction to strengthen the hemisphere and take concrete actions that benefit the peoples of the Americas, especially in an area that is very sensitive, as is security."
The General Assembly, a hemispheric meeting held annually, will focus on the theme, "Citizen Security in the Americas," which was proposed by the Government of El Salvador to the members of the OAS Permanent Council last December. In this regard, Ambassador Ramdin welcomed the initiative of the Central American government and stressed that "your choice of topic speaks of your understanding of what is important to the Americas. Security and development are both issues of main concern for our people and therefore the eyes of the world will be on El Salvador during the first week of June.”
