OAS Assistant Secretary General Briefs CARICOM Chair on Haiti

The Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Albert Ramdin, met on Monday with the Chair of the Caribbean Community Grenada’s Prime Minister Tillman Thomas, on the political developments in Haiti.

During the meeting which took place at the Office of the Prime Minister in Grenada, Assistant Secretary General Ramdin delivered to the CARICOM Chair the Official Report of the OAS Experts who were asked to verify the first round of Haiti’s elections. Ambassador Ramdin and Prime Minister Thomas also discussed the concerns and challenges in Haiti and preparations for the second round of the elections.

According to Ambassador Ramdin, dialogue between the OAS and CARICOM on this issue is significant given Haiti’s presence in both organizations. Ramdin, who is also the Chair of the Haiti Task Force at the OAS, raised the issue of collaboration between the OAS and CARICOM on social and economic development in Haiti. “The Caribbean Community has an important role to play in facilitating discussions on this issue, both now and in the future,” said Ramdin.

While in Grenada, the high ranking OAS official also met with Grenada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Karl Hood, Minister of State Denneth Modeste and Governor General Carlyle Glean.

The meeting with the CARICOM Chair follows a briefing in Jamaica recently with outgoing CARICOM Chair, Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding.
