OAS SECRETARY GENERAL REJECTS VIOLENCE IN THE GAZA STRIP
AND CALLS FOR A NEW PEACE INITIATIVE

  December 29, 2008

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, expressed today his “absolute rejection” of the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip and urged its immediate halt. At the same time, he called for restoration of the cease-fire, an end to the embargo on the Gaza Strip, and the establishment of a new peace initiative.

“The killing of hundreds of innocent people this weekend can never be justified, not even on the pretext of reprisals,” Mr. Insulza said. “One massacre always leads to another and jeopardizes chances for peace, which the entire world is crying out for today more than ever before,” he added.

“This tragedy casts a pall over the end of a difficult year for humankind, but we must not lose hope in the goodwill of the leaders of the region to return to the path to peace,” the OAS Secretary General concluded.
