LITHUANIA IS OAS PERMANENT OBSERVER NUMBER 64

  December 16, 2009

Lithuania today became the 64th Permanent Observer of the Organization of American States (OAS) when the Organization’s Permanent Council approved its request in a meeting of the council held at OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Lithuania requested the condition of Permanent Observer through a letter sent October 29, 2009, to the Secretary General of the Organization and thus began a process that concluded today with its acceptance by the Permanent Council. With the inclusion of Lithuania, all countries of the European Union except for Malta are Permanent Observers of the OAS.

Lithuania is a parliamentary Republic situated in the Baltic Sea with a population of some 3 million that declared its independence from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in March 1990. It is a member of the United Nations and its agencies, of the European Union, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Alliance of Civilizations to which belong Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay.

Lithuania already has diplomatic ties to 25 countries of the region, and is in the process of establishing ties with nine others. Also, it has embassies in Argentina, Canada and the United States and a General Consulate in Sao Paulo. Lithuania has bilateral treaties with Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Uruguay and Venezuela.

The first Permanent Observer of Lithuania before the OAS is Ambassador Audrius Bruzga, who also is Ambassador before the United States and Concurrent Ambassador in Mexico.

“I’m deeply honored and proud to be able to address this distinguished council on behalf of my country,” Ambassador Bruzga said. “As you know the government of the Republic of Lithuania has decided to seek closer ties with the Organization of American States…. We in Lithuania see the Organization of American States as a unique forum for Pan American dialogue and cooperation. Its long and rich tradition of building consensus through dialogue and negotiation is inspiring.”

The status of Permanent Observer before the Organization of American States (OAS) was established in 1971 at the OAS General Assembly held in San Jose, Costa Rica. Permanent Observers participate in the activities of the Organization and contribute to its programs.
