OAS SECRETARY GENERAL DENIES STATEMENTS AND REINFORCES SUPPORT FOR TEGUCIGALPA-SAN JOSE ACCORD

  December 15, 2009

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, who today reiterated his support for the Tegucigalpa-San Jose Accord toward a solution to the political crisis in Honduras, denied having challenged the political independence of Porfirio Lobo Sosa, who he believes will restore democratic stability in his country.

“I continue to believe that the Tegucigalpa-San Jose Accord will provide the basis for democracy and reconciliation in Honduras, for that country to overcome a crisis that has been going on for too long. I don’t question the independence of Porfirio Lobo Sosa with respect to the de facto government and I have not said that he is being manipulated, as has been claimed by interested parties and reported in the Honduran media. On the contrary, I believe his proposal to unite the Honduran democratic forces in a large-scale National Agreement must be given a chance.”

Insulza also supported steps toward solving the situation of constitutionally elected President José Manuel Zelaya, to allow his exit without conditions from the Brazilian Embassy and to reestablish respect for human rights and public liberties that, he said, “would allow the new President to assume his charge with greater acceptance by the international community.”
