NORWEGIAN CONTRIBUTION SUPPORTS OAS DEMINING PROGRAMS IN THE AMERICAS

A contribution of US$785,791 made by the Government of Norway will help support the work of the Office of Humanitarian Mine Action of the Organization of American States (OAS). The contribution coincides with the 10th Anniversary of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction, commemorated in Oslo last month.
Of the total funds, US$100,000 will be allocated to the victim assistance programs in Colombia and Peru. The remaining amount will provide support to Nicaragua’s demining effort and enable Central American countries to export their experience.
The victim assistance programs in Colombia and Peru include financial support for travel, subsistence, prosthetics services, and physical and psychological rehabilitation services to reduce the impact of their injuries.
The armed conflict in Nicaragua during the 1980s left many populated areas, including its borders with Honduras and Costa Rica, contaminated with mines. Approximately 240 communities throughout the country are located within five kilometers of mined areas. The total number of antipersonnel mines destroyed or certified through clearance operations reached 153,911 in July 2007. Also, 942 of the 991 known mined areas were cleared by that time, continuing the projected completion for OAS humanitarian demining operations by the end of 2008.
Norway has been a leading country in the support for humanitarian mine action for over 10 years.
