CHAIRMAN OF THE PERMANENT COUNCIL OF THE OAS SAYS HE REGRETS SUSPENSION OF VISIT OF FOREIGN MINISTERS TO HONDURAS

  August 10, 2009

The Chairman of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Pedro Oyarce, of Chile, today regretted that the visit of the Delegation of Foreign Ministers to Honduras would not take place as planned.

Likewise, Oyarce rejected the language of some of the representatives of the de facto Government of Honduras towards the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza, and recalled that the Permanent Council accepted a proposal by the Secretary General to organize a mission for the purpose of traveling to that country to find, through dialogue, a consensus around the Accord of San José put forward by President Óscar Arias.

The Chairman of the Permanent Council also stressed the validity and relevance of Resolution 2 of the XXXVII Extraordinary General Assembly of the OAS, which charges the Secretary General to, along with representatives of various countries, intensify diplomatic action and promote initiatives to achieve the restoration of democracy, the rule of law and the restitution of President José Manuel Zelaya Rosales.

Finally, Ambassador Oyarce said the Permanent Coucil would remain watchful of the development of this situation.
