KOREAN DONATION BOOSTS ELECTORAL OBSERVATION AND OTHER OAS PROGRAMS
October 1, 2007
Programs pursued by the Organization of American States (OAS) in the areas of electoral observation and democracy promotion have received an important boost, thanks to financial contributions from the government of Korea.
During a ceremony at OAS headquarters today, Korea’s Alternate Observer to the OAS, Chong-on Won, presented the Director of the Department of External Relations, Irene Klinger, with two checks for $20,000 each—for the Electoral Observation Mission in Costa Rica and for OAS Model Assemblies in the region. The OAS will observe Costa Rica’s November 7 referendum on the Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Central America-Dominican Republic (CAFTA-DR).
Today’s donations bring to $70,000 the amount donated by Korea recently, including $30,000 already given for the recent OAS Electoral Observation Mission in Guatemala. Chong-on reiterated his government’s commitment to supporting the efforts of the inter-American organization, where Korea has had observer status since 1981.
In addition to the OAS team that will monitor the upcoming Costa Rican referendum, the 25th Model OAS General Assembly slated for Argentina in December will also benefit from the Korean gift. Klinger explained that through Model General Assembly sessions, the OAS promotes the participation of the hemisphere’s youth who take on the role of Member States in addressing key hemispheric agenda issues such as democracy, human rights, trade and the fight against illicit drugs.
Korea has made an important contribution to the OAS by helping to advance the organization’s efforts in electoral observation, said Klinger, who noted that monitoring elections in Member States is a “fundamental function” of the OAS.
