OAS and Government of Serbia Sign Memorandum of Understanding

  June 6, 2010

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Serbia today signed the first Memorandum of Understanding between them that will strengthen their cooperation in the area of democracy. They did so in the framework of the 40th OAS General Assembly in Lima.

The agreement, which formalizes the support the hemispheric organization receives from the Government of Serbia in the area of democracy and the Lecture Series of the Americas, was signed by OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza and the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Vuk Jeremic. Established in 2004, the Lecture Series of the Americas monthly addresses the key subjects of the hemispheric agenda and contributes to the promotion of democratic values and principles in the countries of the hemisphere.

Secretary General Insulza thanked the Serbian Foreign Minister for the interest his government has shown in the OAS and said he was motivated by the commitment to democracy and democratic institutions of the government of said European country.

“It has been in the past few years during your tenure as Foreign Minister that this observer status has gathered strength. Thank you for the interest you have given to our organization, for your commitment to multilateralism and for making the idea of being an observer a real and substantial one and not just a matter of words,” the topmost OAS representative said. “We are very encouraged by your commitment to democracy and to democratic institutions, to the advancement of human rights, to the promotion of development, to ensuring security, to fostering prosperity for all our citizens, and I would say also a definite commitment to solve international problems through dialogue and peaceful means. This is a friendship we have to strengthen, and we hope to strengthen it in the next month and the next years.”

For his part, Minister Jeremic said, “It’s really a great honor to be the first minister of foreign affairs in the history of my country to sign and be present at a ceremony like this, and also to be very actively involved in cooperation between my country and the Organization of American States at the multilateral level. Today we are very proud of it and we seek even closer ties with the Western Hemisphere.”

Serbia became an OAS Permanent Observer in 2002. Permanent Observers participate in the activities of the Organization and contribute to its programs.
