  August 6, 2015

The Chief of the OAS Electoral Observation Mission to the legislative elections in Haiti to be held this Sunday, August 9, today discussed the organization of the process with electoral officials, party representatives and the Head of MINUSTAH, as the Mission completed its deployment.

The Chief of Organization of American States (OAS) Mission, José Enrique Castillo Barrantes, met today with the President of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP), Pierre Louis Opont; the United Nations Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), Sandra Honoré; and representatives of political parties.

The Mission, made up of 28 observers from 12 countries, will be present in all the departments of the country.

The OAS/EOM was the first international observation mission to begin its work ahead of Sunday’s elections. The observers of the mobile unit have been in the country since June 22nd, witnessed the start of the election campaign and have visited all departments. Former Costa Rican Foreign Minister Castillo visited the country earlier in July.

The Mission will analyze various aspects of the process including electoral organization, the use of technology and the participation of women.

On Monday following the election, the Mission will make public its preliminary findings. Following the elections, a final report including observations and recommendations aimed at improving the electoral system will be submitted to the OAS Permanent Council.
