GRENADA ASSUMES CHAIR OF OAS PERMANENT COUNCIL

  October 1, 2002

Grenada assumed the chairmanship of the Organization of American States' (OAS) Permanent Council today, with the Permanent Representative, Ambassador Dennis Antoine, stating he intends to continue implementing the agenda priorities to advance hemispheric development.

Accepting the gavel from outgoing Chairman United States Ambassador Roger Noriega, the Grenadian diplomat noted how seriously his country takes this leadership of the Organization's second highest decision-making body, "and will endeavor to make a meaningful contribution to ensure that there is continuity and that the agenda in the next three months remains relevant to the priority issues of all member states."

Other priorities he touched on include ensuring the OAS continue to pursue hemispheric cooperation for peace and security as top agenda issues. He also suggested that the OAS cannot remain silent on such issues as trade and financial services that are vital to development in some of the smaller member states.

For his part, Ambassador Noriega touched on highlights of his tenure he called "a very interesting and rewarding experience." He made special mention of OAS initiatives on Nicaragua, Venezuela and Haiti, and thanked his Permanent Mission's staff and the OAS General Secretariat staff for the support he received.

Costa Rica's Ambassador to the OAS, Walter Niehaus Bonilla, is the Permanent Council's new Vice Chairman, succeeding El Salvador's Permanent Representative, Ambassador Margarita Escobar.

Today's hand-over ceremony marked Grenada's fourth time in the rotating Permanent Council chair, since joining the OAS in 1975.
