VICE PRESIDENT OUTLINES BOLIVIA'S ANTI-CORRUPTION CAMPAIGN

  September 13, 2002

Bolivia's Vice President, Carlos Mesa, said at the Organization of American States in Washington today that his government was determined to step up its war on corruption, a priority issue on the international agenda.

During his meeting with Secretary General César Gaviria , the Bolivian Vice President stressed the importance of the OAS Convention against Corruption, adopted in 1996. He said, "with the follow-up process, the progress by signatory countries, including Bolivia, can be evaluated in terms of their commitments and achievements, or potential problems that must be addressed."

Mesa said his visit to the United States has been very positive, "and I believe it will help advance our fight against corruption."

The Bolivian Vice President, who addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New York Thursday, also spoke about his meetings with various multilateral agencies, seeking to expand the anti-corruption program begun under the previous administration
