Statement by OAS Secretary General on World Press Freedom Day

  May 3, 2012

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, said today that freedom in the practice of journalism is a basic pillar of democracy, and called on governments and societies as a whole to respect that right in an effort to build more just and democratic societies.

The head of the OAS strongly condemned violence against journalists around the world, and interpreted attacks against them as an expression of shameful intolerance, contradictory to the principles of peace and freedom we all seek. He also expressed concern about the statistics indicating that, in recent years, press freedom has declined worldwide.

In this regard, he called on all social stakeholders, public and private, to assist in creating a climate of respect for freedom of information and acceptance of diversity and pluralism. "In a democracy, everything can be said with respect and with the awareness that others advocate a different thought, which is sometimes in opposition to another," said Insulza.

The Secretary General also referred to new forms of informative interaction created by modern communication technologies, and said that the space of freedom that they open must be looked after with full commitment and respect for others’ views.
