COMMISSION OF WOMEN TO CONSIDER GENDER AND JUSTICE ISSUES

  July 25, 2002

The Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) is convening a meeting of experts in Washington July 30 and 31 to discuss how to incorporate gender perspectives into the policies and programs of the member states' justice ministries.

An Organization of American States (OAS) specialized agency, CIM is convening the meeting to consider a document entitled, "Towards Justice with Gender." The experts will also refer recommendations and strategies to the Hemisphere's justice ministers and attorneys general.

According to Carmen Lomellin, the Executive Secretary of CIM, this process will help consolidate the progress already made in incorporating gender perspective into the Declaration and Plan of Action of the Third Summit of the Americas.

"The progress on this issue can only take root if each country ensures continuity and implementation by way of concrete policies. That is why it is important for us to submit our recommendations to the ministers," Lomellin added.

Part of an effort to incorporate gender perspective into the agendas of ministerial conferences, the upcoming meeting came out of the Inter-American Program on the Promotion of the Human Rights of Women and on Gender Equity and Equality, adopted in 2000. Last December, the first meeting was held, focussing on gender and labor.

Set to commence at 9:00 a.m. on July 30, the experts' meeting will be held in the Padilha Vidal Room at the OAS General Secretariat Building, 1889 F St., NW, Washington, D.C.
