  April 2, 2012

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, sent his condolences and those of the organization to the family and the government of Mexico, on the passing of former President Miguel de la Madrid. Insulza praised the “great work that President De la Madrid carried out when he assumed the presidency of his country and was forced to confront the difficult economic conditions that marked that time.”

The Secretary General recalled that during De la Madrid’s term in office, the former Mexican President established the basis for the fight against corruption, putting in place mechanisms for transparency and accountability that marked a change in public administration. “His stature will grow with the years,” said Insulza, who highlighted “the composure, the modesty and the patience with which former President De la Madrid confronted the complex stage Mexico faced at that time, and later the terrible consequences of the earthquake of 1985.”

Insulza, who lived part of his exile in Mexico during the presidency of De la Madrid, underlined the country’s international role at the time, during the crisis of Central America. “The Contadora Group, a pillar of the solution to the conflicts that the Central American countries were going through, was born through the impetus of President De la Madrid, who advocated persistently to achieve peace in that much beloved region.
