NEW HONDURAN ENVOY PRESENTS CREDENTIALS AT OAS

  May 29, 2002

The new Permanent Representative of Honduras presented credentials at the Organization of American States today, reiterating his President's support for the Organization as it seeks to carry out its mandates from the Hemisphere's leaders.

Ambassador Salvador Rodezno Fuentes presented his accreditation letters to Secretary General César Gaviria, expressing his "fervent interest" in continuing the work of his predecessors to advance the agenda of the hemispheric body.

In welcoming the new Ambassador, the Secretary General said the Honduran diplomat's experience would serve the OAS very well. Noting that Ambassador Rodezno Fuentes was coming to the OAS on the eve of the 32nd General Assembly session—which opens in Barbados on Sunday, June 2—Gaviria gave a brief overview of how the hemispheric Organization has pursued unprecedented opportunities for hemispheric cooperation to tackle some major challenges.

A career Foreign Service Officer, the new Honduran Permanent Representative has served as Ambassador in Uruguay and as Alternate Representative to the United Nations in New York. He also previously served at the Embassy in Washington, D.C., and as Consul General in Los Angeles.

Rodezno Fuentes obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees in political science and international relations, respectively, from the University of California at Los Angeles.
