OAS CHIEF GETS INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD

  May 22, 2002

César Gaviria, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States, was presented with the International Courage in Leadership Award by The Washington Times Tuesday night, for his role a conflict mediator, democracy advocate, staunch support of hemispheric integration and human rights defender.

Mr. Gaviria received the award during a gala affair marking the newspaper's 20th anniversary, with some 3,000 U.S. congress members, state legislators, and business and religious leaders in attendance.

Gaviria-who became Secretary General in 1994, prior to which he was Colombia's president-thanked the Washington Times "on behalf of the peoples of Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States and Canada" for its objective analysis and coverage of hemispheric issues.
