SOUTH CAROLINA CONFERENCE TO BUILD BRIDGE TO CARIBBEAN

  April 25, 2002

The Museum of the Americas is teaming up with the South Carolina World Trade Center and the City of Charleston to organize a two-day conference entitled "Caribbean Realities - The Bridge to the Future" on June 7 and 8 at the S.C. State Ports Authority Passenger Terminal.

Lucy M. Duncan, president of the Organization of American States (OAS)-affiliated MuseAmericas and a Charleston native, explained that the event is intended to promote closer cultural and economic links between Charleston and its southern neighbors.

In its April 22 edition, Charleston's Post and Courier newspaper quoted the MuseAmericas official saying the event is expected to bring officials from seven Caribbean nations to that city for the two-day session. She said there would also be 30 companies from the Caribbean looking to invest and develop markets in the Lowcountry. Many are interested in the restaurant and tourist industry, she said.

Duncan stated that OAS officials as well as others from the Inter-American Development Bank and the Caribbean Development Bank would be on hand to discuss trade opportunities for businesses. International corporations will also send representatives to discuss business opportunities in the Caribbean.

"This is a fabulous way to become acquainted with new business opportunities, while networking with a blue ribbon caliber of speakers," Duncan was quoted as saying.

"Executives responsible for business development, from law, banking, engineering, architecture, wholesalers, retailers, as well as professionals in technology, tourism, transportation, medicine, education, the arts will find a Caribbean treasure chest of new ideas and contacts. Business leaders looking for new, exotic products to be imported will find a wealth of offerings."
