OAS SECRETARY GENERAL ON OFFICIAL VISIT TO MEXICO

Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General César Gaviria leaves Washington today on a three-day official visit to Mexico City where he will meet with top government officials, including President Vicente Fox and Secretary of Foreign Affairs Jorge Castañeda.

On Thursday, Mr. Gaviria is scheduled to meet with the Mexican Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean, Gustavo Iruegas; Undersecretary for Global Affairs, Patricia Olamendi; and Undersecretary for Economic Relations and International Cooperation, Miguel Hakim Simón.

The OAS Secretary General will also on Thursday address a public forum on "Democracy, Globalization and the Institutions of the Inter-American System," and will afterwards attend a function at the Mexican International Affairs Council. Gaviria meets with President Fox and Foreign Affairs Secretary Castañeda on Friday.
