TURKEY MAKES DONATION TO ANTI-TERRORISM
AND OTHER OAS PROGRAMS

  April 3, 2002

Turkey's Permanent Observer to the Organization of American States, Ambassador Farouk Logoglu, today presented Assistant Secretary General Luigi Einaudi with nearly $15,000 in contributions earmarked primarily for the Organization's anti-terrorism programs of the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE).

Portions of the gift will also benefit the Organization's Tourism Unit, Américas Magazine and the OAS Children's Corner, an Internet-based learning and entertainment feature for children and teachers.

"We have taken a very close and deep interest in this Organization and in the countries represented," said Logoglu, who is also his country's Ambassador to the United States. He said his government's permanent observer status with the Western Hemisphere body "attests to this fact," noting as well that Turkey has increased its modest contribution as another indication of its "enhanced interest in the work of this Organization."

Thanking the Turkish government, Ambassador Einaudi remarked that "when a country like Turkey decides to provide support, it is both extremely appreciated and extraordinarily relevant." He said he viewed Turkey's donation as an expression of solidarity and as "a contribution to a matter of vital, immediate common international interest," as well as to issues that represent a commitment to the future of the Hemisphere. Einaudi further described the gesture as an added contribution to "everything from the present fight for survival to the future quality of life."
