UNITED KINGDOM CONTRIBUTES TO OAS PROGRAMS

  March 26, 2002

A US$75,000 contribution from the government of the United Kingdom to the Organization of American States Fund for Peace has been earmarked for initiatives aimed at settling the Belize-Guatemala territorial dispute. The UK has also contributed another $15,000 towards the OAS' Special Mission in Haiti and a similar amount to the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism (CICTE).

The OAS established the "Fund for Peace: Peaceful Settlement of Territorial Disputes" at its General Assembly in Windsor, Canada in June 2000, to help member states defray certain costs involved in procedures agreed to beforehand by the parties engaged in a peaceful settlement of territorial disputes.

As of December last year, more than $750,000 had been contributed to the Fund for Peace, to be distributed among the OAS General Fund, the Belize-Guatemala Sub-fund and the Honduras-Nicaragua Sub-fund.

Since gaining permanent observer status with the OAS in September 1995, the British government has provided assistance for numerous OAS programs.
