Assistant Secretary General Luigi Einaudi today conveyed the solidarity of the Organization of American States to the government and people of Uruguay in the wake of recent deadly flooding in that country.
During a brief ceremony in Washington, the Assistant Secretary General presented a check for $10,000 to Uruguay's Ambassador to the OAS, Juan Enrique Fischer, remarking that "while we are unable to make a large, direct contribution towards reconstruction, we are making this symbolic contribution through the Inter-American Emergency Aid Fund (FONDEM) to express our deepest solidarity with the people of Uruguay."
Accepting the donation, the Uruguayan diplomat explained that the unprecedented floods struck a vast area of the country, leaving a painful human toll as well as enormous damage to what is a predominantly agricultural zone.
He thanked the OAS for its "speedy and considerate response," noting as well the significance of this "immediate, direct and unequivocal gesture, beyond its material value."
