Chief of OAS Foreign Visitors Mission to the Elections in Mexico Begins Preliminary Visit

The Chief of the Foreign Visitors Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) to the July 1 elections in Mexico, the former President of the Dominican Republic Leonel Fernández, today began a preliminary visit to the country to learn about the progress made in the organization of the elections.

During the week, President Fernández will hold meetings with the different actors in the electoral process, including electoral authorities from the National Electoral Institute, the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation, the Specialized Attorney for Attention to Electoral Crimes and the Electoral Institute of Mexico City, as well as government officials, candidates and campaign teams of the competing political parties.

The Foreign Visitors Mission will begin its deployment in the country in mid-June and will be made up of experts in electoral organization and technology, campaign financing, women´s political participation and electoral justice, among other areas. Moreover, the Mission will include regional coordinators and observers in the different states of the country to observe the vote itself.

This will be the fourth electoral process that the OAS has observed in Mexico, following missions to the federal elections of 2009 and 2015, and the local elections of 2012.
