Statement of the OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza Regarding the Removal of Cable Channels in Venezuela

  January 25, 2010

“I regret the situation in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela regarding the removal from the airwaves of six cable television channels, a situation to which the Commissioner for Venezuelan Affairs and the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights referred yesterday. I reiterate the OAS position, and my own, of supporting dialogue and understanding between the parties. It would be very helpful if toward that end, and in agreement with the OAS Charter and the American Convention on Human Rights, the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela would allow the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression to visit the country."
