  April 13, 2010

More than 200 disaster risk management and climate change experts will meet decision makers from across the Americas in Santa Marta, Colombia, April 14-16, 2010, to participate in the Second Hemispheric Encounter on National Mechanisms and Networks for Disaster Risk Reduction: “Encounter of Santa Marta: From Theory to Practice.”

Experts from a variety of government institutions in OAS member states, such as disaster risk management and climate change, financing, development planning, health and education will join experts from the services sector, production sector, public and private sectors, NGOs and academia, among others, to exchange successful experiences and best practices in disaster risk management and adaptation to climate change. The discussions during the Encounter will revolve around the proposals that were submitted by the participating countries in response to the call for case studies for the Santa Marta Encounter; in total, over 100 proposals were submitted and carefully reviewed.

This Encounter is being convened and organized by the Government of Colombia, through the Ministry of the Interior and Justice, and its Directorate for Risk Management for Disaster Prevention and Relief (DGR); the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (GS/OAS), through its Department of Sustainable Development (OAS/DSD); and the Secretariat of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), through its Regional Office for the Americas, UNISDR Americas.

This Encounter will serve to strengthen the Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas and contribute to implementing the Hyogo Framework for Action. The 20th anniversary of the Colombian National Directorate for Disaster Prevention and Relief provides a conducive environment to review the achievements in disaster risk reduction across the Hemisphere over the past 20 years.
