OAS PANEL TO EXAMINE ENVIRONMENTAL TRENDS AND GOOD GOVERNANCE AHEAD OF MINISTERIAL MEETING ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The Organization of American States (OAS) Department of Sustainable Development is hosting a panel discussion on Thursday, September 14, on the topic, “Environmental Trends and Good Governance.”

The panel is being convened as member states prepare for the First Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Officials on Sustainable Development, to be held October 5-6 in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, ten years after the Summit on Sustainable Development was held there.

Secretary General José Miguel Insulza will deliver opening remarks at the forum, which begins at 10:00 a.m., in the Padilha Vidal Room at the OAS General Secretariat Building. The session runs until 1:00 p.m.

Environmental Trends and the Millennium Ecosystem will be discussed by a panel of experts, among them Dr. Thomas E. Lovejoy, President of the John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the EnvironmentH. ; and Dr. Cristián Samper, Director, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Perspectives on Governance, Public Participation and Environmental Management will be shared by Ruth Greenspan Bell, Resident Scholar/Director, Program for International Institutional Development and Environmental Assistance, Resources for the Future; and Karin M. Krchnak, Director of International Water Policy, the Nature Conservancy, among others.
