The Organization of American States OASGeneral Assembly will convene in special session to adopt the statutes of the Inter-American Defense Board (IADB), which will make the Board an agency of the OAS. Delegations from the 34 member states will meet at OAS headquarters in Washington on Wednesday, March 15, at 3:00 p.m., for that purpose.
In a report presented to the OAS Permanent Council two weeks ago, the Chairman of the Committee on Hemispheric Security, Ambassador Esteban Tomic of Chile, recommended that the corresponding draft resolution and statutes of the Board be adopted, following in-depth research and analysis. This move is intended to foster “greater transparency, confidence and security in the countries of the hemisphere,” the report stated.
Created in 1942 by the Third Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the American Republics, the IADB advises the OAS on military and defense-related issues.
