PRESS CONFERENCE
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is holding a press conference on Friday, September 28, at 11:00 a.m., to report on its success in the case of the Mayagna Awas Tingni Indigenous Community v. the State of Nicaragua. The case was filed with the Costa Rica-based Inter-American Court of Human Rights which handed down its verdict on August 31, 2001, finding that the Awas Tingni Indigenous Community had the right to property and right to judicial protection provided for under the American Convention on Human Rights. The decision of the Inter-American Court represents a turning point in the defense of the rights of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. On hand at the press conference will be, from the IACHR: Chairman Claudio Grossman, Executive Secretary Santiago Canton and Nicaragua desk officer Bertha Santoscoy; and Steve Tullberg and Armstrong Wiggins, representatives of the Indian Law Resource Center.
