OAS OPENS PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION FEATURING AMERICAN JULIA CART

American artist Julia Cart is being featured in a photographic exhibition that opened at the Organization of American States (OAS) Art Gallery on Thursday, as the international community recalled the deep pain inflicted by the September 11 terrorist acts in the United States that left thousands dead.

U.S. Ambassador to the OAS Roger Noriega opened the exhibition, articulating his government and people's firm commitment to cooperation with the other nations of the Hemisphere to deal with the horrendous terrorist acts, vowing they will not allow the cowardly acts to scare them.

Mounted under the auspices of the U.S. Permanent Mission to the OAS, the exhibition will run until next Friday, September 28.

Julia Cart is especially known for her documentary work inspired by South Carolina. Her images and techniques are based on nineteenth century photographs. A self-taught artist, Julia Cart works exclusively in black-and-white.

She was born in Quantico, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Charleston with a Master's degree in fine arts. The artist also studied at the Jacques Lecoq School in Paris, and served in Senegal as a Peace Corps volunteer.

This is Julia Cart's first exhibition in Washington, D.C.
