MEXICO HOSTS REGIONAL COURSE ON PARLIAMENT,  
DEMOCRACY AND INTEGRATION

 

            A regional course on "Parliament, Democracy and Integration," held in Mexico City this past November 11 through 18, brought together more than 70 young political leaders from Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama.

The Organization of American States (OAS) Unit for the Promotion of Democracy organized the course whose objective was to promote awareness of the legislative branch and help develop a regional forum for analysis, study and exchange of experiences on the legislative branch.

Eighteen of the participants were deputies in their respective countries and three served with the Central American Parliament.  The course also drew in top congressional officials as well as leaders of major political parties and media representatives.

 Among other topics, the academic program covered: parliament and democracy, political representation,  developing the law, political oversight of parliament, political management for parliaments and parliamentary aspects of integration.

The course was sponsored by the Mexican Senate, the Chamber of Deputies, the  Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM), the State University of New York (SUNY), Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) and the Central American Institute of Political Studies (INCEP).

Those addressing the opening ceremony included Beatriz Paredes Rangel, President of the Mexican Chamber of Deputies and President of the Latin American Parliament; Senate President Diego Fernández de Cevallos; Senate Vice President César Jáuregui;  ITAM Rector José Ramón Cossío; and an INCEP Representative.  Rubén Perina, Coordinator of the UPD's Area of Institutional Strengthening, represented the OAS.
