AMBASSADOR TELLS OAS THAT HONDURANS DEMONSTRATED UTMOST COMMITMENT TO DEMOCRACY IN RECENT ELECTIONS

 

            Opposition leader Ricardo Maduro won Sunday's presidential elections in which Honduran voters and the candidates themselves demonstrated the utmost commitment to their country's democracy, the  Ambassador to the Organization of American States (OAS), Laura Nuñez Flores, told the Organization's  Permanent Council today. 

The Honduran diplomat said the elections were peaceful and were viewed as "open and fair, as has been the case in successive elections for more than two decades now." 

            Citing comments by OAS Electoral Observation Mission Chief Elizabeth Spehar on the prevailing tone on election day, the Ambassador said "it shows that Honduras is consolidating representative democracy as the system of government, and attests to the smooth transition of power and the legitimacy of representation of the people, who openly and freely choosing their leaders." 

            Ambassador Núñez thanked the OAS for sending its team of monitors, and singled out the United States among countries that provided financing.
